Those of us in the US who are resisting understand the tsunami of frightening news. We understand the fear and despair.
Your support and empathy for those of in the US who resist is a brilliant light in the darkness.
Please don’t give up on us. We will never give up on you.
I am not an expert but there are experts on Substack who offer ideas about resisting fascism from the start.
By sharing some of the stories of our broken justice system, our immigration cruelty and concentration camps, our Big Ugly Bill that leaves children and seniors short of health care and food, the destruction of our education system and the other corruptions, you can show other Canadians that MAGA is disastrous.
Be active. Do not let a MAGA cult grow in Canada. Take it seriously and challenge it ceaselessly.
And love yourselves as Canadians. You need a big heart to stop hate. Reach out to everyone you can and say “In Canada, we will not let hate win. We will be unanimous in our stand for liberty and freedom.”
Our thoughts and prayers and good wishes are with you.
Thank you Professor and author of Canada Resists. My son, who used to work in the US Senate and also on Obama campaigns, keeps me informed of what I need to know. After our election last November I had severe nightmares, panic attacks, and nausea. I ended up in ER one morning thinking I was having a heart attack or stroke. I do not watch television at all (except tennis) and have stayed clear of all news. My son tells me what I need to know early in the morning when he calls so I have time to absorb it. As an avid reader I’m sticking to books about nature, gardening, horticultural therapy, mindfulness, classics, and quality memoirs. I meditate, do yoga, and have volunteer projects.
I would like to know what is going on with the getting the horrible wildfires under control. Today, July 14, we have an Air Quality Alert with the air considered “unhealthy”. We are almost 900 miles from Winnipeg. My daughter, in the St. Paul, Minnesota area, is even closer. They also have an “unhealthy” Air Quality Alert also and my grandchildren’s summer day camps have been moved inside.
Thank you for all of your empathy and support for us.
I’m sorry to hear how the political situation has been taking a toll. But it sounds like you’ve come up with a solid coping strategies.
Manitoba is experiencing its worst wildfire season with over 107 active fires and nearly one million hectares burned (20x normal). A renewed state of emergency was declared on July 10, prompting evacuations in northern communities. Smoke has led to severe air quality warnings across Manitoba and into parts of the U.S., while new federal aid was approved on support evacuation and firefighting efforts. The province remains at its highest alert level, with national and international teams assisting on the ground.
Thank you to Canada for your support. Every day here is a new crisis-some of them specifically designed to distract us. Every day you have to sort through the news to determine what is truth and what is just the magician saying, “no, no, no, don’t look at this, watch the magic trick over here”. It takes a lot out of you. When you’re attempting to organize your week as to what protests you can attend; what training you can take in order to be a court observer… sometimes you just have to step away for a day. But then I think of those in CECOT or in the detainee camp in Florida (Alligator Auschwitz) and those left at home trying to find a way to at least find out if their loved ones are even alive-how that’s a 24/7 horror for them, I know I can’t stop trying to do what I can.
Canada Resists, thank you for providing positive feedback and good thoughts from our Northern neighbors. Please don’t let this happen to your country. Be vigilant 💚from California.
Had a photo comment for this excellent piece (sums things up so,well) but I’m sure it’ll pop up later. (Spare room sounds good; not too sure about the canoe but it’s fascinating to ruminate upon...)
Thank you, Canada Resists and Canadians, for your support. It can feel like we in the US are alone in the world, even though hundreds of thousands of us are doing everything we can to resist what is happening here. Nice to know there are still empathetic voices to the North!
Arkansas here, and it is scary. I am so grateful for this substack and Charlie Angus. Canadian’s have been my lifeline of not feeling alone. Thank you Canada 🇨🇦 for all your kindness. Each kind response feeds my soul. I think it is critical to give your self time away from all media to remain healthy. I limit my time, and give myself a day with no media. ❤️ to Canada. Elbows up.
Next protest , "Good Trouble" next Thursday. Also 1 Million Rising training starts next Wednesday , sign up! Don't let them live in your head, take action instead.
Thank you folks in Canada, it's good to know you see us!
I’m a Missourian and I appreciate the Canadians’ thoughts and well wishes. I hope they don’t become a fascist state too, but perhaps we’ll be a wake up call for them. No one should feel bad or ashamed about backing away from the barrage of information right now. We understand, it’s okay. Just knowing you’re there allays some of our fears. Elbows Up!
I'm live in the Missouri Ozarks. I have to limit my political reading as well. This state is very red outside of the biggest cities. I see and hear it all the time.
Thank you, Canada. It's scary here and it gets a little worse every day.
